I. POLICY:
GDC firefighters will be trained according to NFPA standards
and Ga. Law H.B. #316 passed by the 1985 General Assembly.
II. APPLICABILITY:
State Institutions designated by the GDC to operate a fire
station.
III. RELATED DIRECTIVES:
A. National Fire Protection Association Life Safety
Standards 1946, 1967, 1976, 1981, 1985, 1201, 1403 and
Ga. Code Title 8. Building and Housing and Title 25.

VI. PROCEDURE:
A. All firefighting personnel will meet training
requirements as mandated by the Georgia Fire Academy and
the Georgia Firefighters Standard and Training Council.
Fire Safety training will be approved by the GDC Fire

Services Manager and must comply with the following
general guidelines:
1. Personnel driving fire apparatus must have a valid
Class B-non commercial drivers license.
2. All persons riding on fire apparatus shall be seated
and secured to the vehicle by seat belts or safety
harnesses at any time the vehicle is in motion.
Riding on tail steps or in any other exposed
position shall be specifically prohibited.
3. Personnel driving or riding a fire apparatus will
wear helmets and utilize seat belts.
4. Protective clothing provided by GDC will be worn on
all emergency runs. (Emergency runs include all
structural, wood and grass fires, and hazardous
material spills.)
5. The inner lining of protective clothing will not be
removed for any reason.
6. Self-contained breathing apparatus and protective
clothing must be utilized in any smoke or live fire
or hazardous materials operation.
7. No live fire training evolutions as defined by NFPA
1403, shall be conducted without instructor
certified by the GA. Fire Academy in the subject
being taught.
8. In-service training classes must meet the
requirements of the facility that (based on GDC
standards and state mandated requirements) have been
identified by the GDC Fire Marshal’s Office. An
outline of any other in-service training to be
conducted must be submitted to the GDC Fire
Marshal’s Office for approval prior to the training
being conducted.
B. The following training standards are required by GDC:
1. All firefighters will complete the Georgia Basic
Firefighter Course. No personnel shall be involved
in a live fire operation prior to completion of the

Georgia Basic Firefighter Course. Personnel shall not respond to any fire/rescue call before completion of the Georgia Basic Firefighter Course. 2. All firefighters assigned to GDC Fire Stations shall receive twenty (20) hours per month of fire related training. 3. All Station Chiefs are required to complete 120 hours of fire related training per year as required by the Georgia Firefighter’s Standards and Training Council. 4. Training will be entered into the FireHouse software program by the 5 [th] of the month following the reporting month. 5. Training requests for classes requiring certified trainer must be completed and submitted to the GDC Fire Marshal two weeks prior to the requested date of the class. (See Attachment 1).
