Killed in segregation (the hole)
What happened (confirmed facts)
• Victim: Javion Benham, age 21
• Location: Valdosta State Prison
• Date discovered: December 24
• Time pronounced dead: 6:00 p.m. by the Lowndes County Coroner’s Office
• Estimated time of death: Monday, December 22 (approximately two days earlier)
• Cause of death: Strangulation
• Manner of death: Homicide
Unconfirmed info from inmates:
It happened in Dorm K-1. Another roommate-on-roommate homicide in lockdown. An older white guy killed 21 year old black kid, choked him out in his sleep.
Javion was dead two days before his body was discovered.
Austin Fiveash, the Lowndes County Coroner, made an unusually blunt public statement:
“It seems unfathomable that a prison can miss someone for two days. That’s a major security concern if nothing else. I understand these inmates deserve to be in prison, but no one deserves to lie dead in prison for two days and begin to decompose. At some point, someone has to listen and do something. Enough lip service from Atlanta, Valdosta State Prison needs help.”
