A federal lawsuit accusing four Baldwin State Prison correctional officers of failing to protect Vincent Dyer, who was fatally stabbed on August 21, 2024, is moving into discovery. U.S. District Judge Tilman E. Self III entered a protective order governing records the Georgia Department of Corrections produces under subpoena. The suit, filed April 13, 2026 in the Middle District of Georgia by Gary Moore, Dyer's father and anticipated estate administrator, alleges Dyer reported threats and asked to be moved shortly before his death, that an officer allowed inmates into his dormitory, that officers did not respond during or after the attack — other inmates pushed him to medical in a laundry bin — and that logbook entries failed to accurately document the attack. The complaint cites the U.S. Department of Justice's October 1, 2024 findings that Georgia fails to protect incarcerated people. A Baldwin County jury convicted Traquan Bangs of malice murder in May for the stabbing; he was sentenced to life without parole plus five years.
