`IVM01-0003`|\n\n\n```\n1. Operation supervisor shall delegate duties to\n correctional officers, and is responsible for the\n supervision of all work projects.\n\n2. Correctional officers shall pick up and transport\n inmates to and from work areas, and shall provide\n necessary supervision and security.\n\n3. All farm staff in non-security positions shall be\n acutely aware of the need for inmate security at all\n times and shall support correctional officers in\n security-related functions if it is necessary for\n the maintenance of security. Said staff shall also\n observe all facility rules concerning security in\n all contexts, and shall seek clarification from\n supervisors or correctional officers when in doubt\n concerning some security aspect of the farm\n operation.\n\n4. All staff shall hold the care and health of animals\n used in the operation to be of utmost importance.\n Animal abuse or mistreatment by inmates or staff\n shall be vigorously prohibited and dealt with in an\n appropriate manner if it occurs. Offenders shall\n not be allowed to work in a Georgia Department of\n Corrections animal enterprise if they have any known\n history of animal abuse.\n\n5. All staff will be held accountable for insuring\n availability of quality drinking water. Water\n checks will be done a minimum of twice daily.\n\n6. Untrained staff can contaminate swine units, causing\n severe losses. Therefore, correctional officers\n assigned to the swine unit are to receive on-the-job\n training in working with swine and should not be\n routinely rotated away from the swine unit once\n trained.\n\n7. Supervisors and correctional officers shall keep\n informed in modern swine operations techniques by\n participating in short-courses and/or classes, which\n may be offered.\n\n```\n\n|Functional Area:

Weekend work necessary to continuous farming\n operations will be handled through scheduling of\n inmates as needed, subject to official limitation on\n length of offender workweek.\n\nC. Record Keeping:\n\n 1. Accurate records pertaining to farm inventory are\n maintained, and Livestock Monthly Report is\n submitted to the State Farm Administrator's Office.\n (Refer to SOP IVM01-0001.)\n\n 2. The State Farm Advisor will monitor livestock\n inventories.\n\nD. Security:\n\n 1. Syringes, needles, medicines, scalpel blades and\n similar supplies are stored in a secure place, and\n are checked out to inmates in accordance with\n institutional security regulations. A record is\n kept indicating what was issued, to whom issued, and\n the time that the item was returned.\n\n 2. Other tools are issued in the same manner.\n\n 3. A daily and monthly inventory is kept on all items\n for security and restocking purposes. Disposable\n items such as needles, syringes, and scalpel blades\n are accounted for and secured in the same manner as\n non-disposable items.\n\n 4. Appropriate reports, as required by Departmental and\n Institutional policy, shall be made to the Deputy\n Warden of Security.\n\nE. Breeding:\n\n 1. Breeding stock is fed by hand once daily.\n\n 4. Sows and boars are wormed every six months, and\n receive vaccinations on a regular basis; boar tusks\n are removed on an as-needed basis.\n\n 5. Purchases of breeding stock are to be conducted by\n the State Farm Advisor, or by designee appointed by\n the State Farm Administrator.\n\n 6. Selection of replacement gilts is based upon the\n reproductive performance of their mothers, utilizing\n a sow productivity indexing system. Accurate\n performance records are kept on all breeding stock.\n\n 7. After breeding, sows are moved to gestation\n facility.\n\n 8. Sows culled from the herd are sold at market. Boars\n culled from the herd are sold at market.\n\n 9. Floor of breeding facility is kept properly cleaned\n and sanitized.\n\n a. Floor is rinsed daily.\n\n b. A thorough cleaning is conducted between groups\n using an approved disinfectant.\n\nF. Gestation:\n\n 1. Sows in gestation facility are hand fed once a day.\n\n 2. Sows are kept in pens according to group during the\n gestation phase.\n\n 3. Open sows are culled and sent to sale.\n\n 4. Farrowing is supervised whenever possible.\n\n 4. Following birth, pigs are to be ear notched, given\n iron vaccinations, tails docked, and needle teeth\n clipped at one to three days of age. At ten days of\n age, male pigs are castrated.\n\n 5. Three days prior to weaning, litters are weighed and\n counted. Accurate records are maintained.\n\n 6. Sows, which are not highly productive, are culled\n from the herd. The decision to cull a sow is based\n on information collected through the sow\n productivity indexing system.\n\n 7. Pigs remain in the nursery facilities until\n bodyweight of approximately 60 to 80 pounds is\n reached; at which time they are moved into the\n finishing facilities. Unthrifty or runt pigs may be\n sold at market with local farm manager\u2019s approval.\n\n 6. Waste management system in nursery should be flushed\n at least one time each day.\n\nI. Finishing:\n\n 1. Hogs are placed in pens in finishing facility\n according to size.\n\n 2. Hogs in finishing phase are treated with medications\n as needed. Withdrawal times for these medications\n prior to slaughter are carefully observed, and are\n in accordance with USDA guidelines.\n\n 3. Hogs are sent to slaughter at approximately 240\n pounds bodyweight.\n\n 4. Finishing facilities are cleaned and sanitized\n frequently. Older facilities must be scraped to\n remove excess waste on an as-needed basis.\n\nJ. Safety:\n\n 1. Weekly safety meetings pertaining to work area\n specific topics will be mandatory. A copy of the\n meeting minutes including a list of attendees should\n be maintained on site for a period of two (2) years.\n\n 2. It will be the responsibility of all Farm Staff to\n monitor farm operations on a daily basis to insure\n the safety of both the staff and inmates assigned to\n this work area.\n\n```",
