APPLICABILITY:\n\n All GDC farms with fruit operations.\n\nIII. RELATED DIRECTIVES:\n\n NONE\n\nIV. DEFINITIONS:\n\n NONE\n\nV. ATTACHMENTS:\n\n NONE\n\nVI. PROCEDURE:\n\n A. Fruit Production:\n\n 1. Fruit production operations function under the\n overall direction of the State Farm Administrator.\n The institutional farm manager is responsible for\n daily operations.\n\n 2. Decisions regarding type of fruit to be grown,\n variety of fruit, number of trees/bushes/vines\n needed, and any other matters which will have an\n impact on production, shall be made only through\n consultation with the State Farm Administrator who\n\n```\n\n|Functional Area:
CORRECTIONS DIVISION/
FACILITIES OPERATIONS|Prev. Orders for plants shall be placed on a timely\n basis for correct and proper plantings.\n\nB. Planning and Preparation Measures:\n\n 1. Production levels and quality of fruit for a given\n year are heavily dependent on planning and\n preparation which must be a priority at the proper\n time.\n\n 2. During September and October, separate soil samples\n will be taken from the area in which each variety of\n fruit is grown, and forwarded to the local county\n extension agent for analysis by the University of\n Georgia. These analyses and any resulting\n recommendations will become guidelines for soil\n amendments for the upcoming year.\n\n 3. During June and July of each crop year, leaf samples\n will be obtained and forwarded to county extension\n director for analysis by the University of Georgia.\n These analyses will determine if appropriate\n fertilization levels are being obtained. If an\n analysis is unfavorable, University recommendations\n\n```\n\n|Functional Area:
CORRECTIONS DIVISION/
FACILITIES OPERATIONS|Prev. Eff. Date:
12/15/02|Page 3 of
4|\n|---|---|---|\n|`Functional Area:`
`CORRECTIONS DIVISION/`
`FACILITIES OPERATIONS`|`Effective Date:`
`9/01/04`|`Reference Number:`
`IVM01-0008`|\n\n\n```\n will be followed to meet the fertilization\n requirements of each variety of fruit.\n\n 4. Preplanning of needs for fertilizer, oils,\n fungicides, insecticides, nematicides, herbicides,\n and growth regulators is essential in order to\n follow proper purchasing procedures.\n\n 5. A detail plan for each crop year will be forwarded\n to the State Farm Advisor.\n\nC. Pruning:\n\n 1. Blueberry bushes will have excessive growth of limbs\n and new shoot growth removed after harvest of\n blueberries has been completed in July.\n\nD. Harvest:\n\n 1. All farm staff shall be acutely aware of the\n importance of harvesting fruit crops in a timely\n manner. The timely and efficient harvest of fruit\n crops require a coordinated effort to insure\n adequate labor, supplies, and transportation are\n available each day. It is the responsibility of the\n institutional farm manager to coordinate these\n efforts.\n\n a. The farm manager should advise the\n institutional warden of anticipated labor needs\n a minimum of thirty (30) days prior to the\n projected harvest date. After harvest begins,\n labor needs must be monitored daily by the farm\n manager to insure needs are met.\n\n b. An accurate inventory of supplies (i.e.\n packaging material, sugar, etc.) must be\n maintained at all times to insure harvesting\n needs are met.\n\n 2. Blueberries and Strawberries:\n\n a. Upon maturity, berries are harvested and those\n to be used for Central Food Distribution are\n carried daily to the processing plant.\n\n```\n\n|Functional Area:
CORRECTIONS DIVISION/
FACILITIES OPERATIONS|Prev. Way bills are properly prepared and\n distributed.\n\n e. Berries for institutional fresh use are weighed\n and delivered to Food Service. All farm staff in non-security positions shall be\n acutely aware of the need for inmate security at all\n times and shall support correctional officers in\n security-related functions if it is necessary for\n the maintenance of security. Said staff shall also\n observe all facility rules concerning security in\n all contexts, and shall seek clarification from\n supervisors or correctional officers when in doubt\n concerning some security aspect of the farm\n operation.\n\nF. All equipment shall be operated and maintained in\n accordance with the federal government's\n Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)\n rules and regulations.\n\n 2. Before using equipment, inmates are to be instructed\n as to proper operation, maintenance, and service.\n\n 3. Prior to applying chemicals, inmates are to be\n instructed in the safe methods of use, and are\n issued gloves, goggles, and other protective\n clothing as may be required. The federal Worker\n Protection Standard and OSHA rules and regulations\n\n```\n\n|Functional Area:
CORRECTIONS DIVISION/
FACILITIES OPERATIONS|Prev. Eff.
