The Southern Center for Human Rights released a report describing conditions at Valdosta State Prison as a “humanitarian disaster unfolding,” saying they are illegal and violate the U.S. Constitution. According to the report, many cells lack functioning sinks or toilets, floors are covered with waste and sewage, temperatures can exceed 100 degrees without air conditioning, and many cells have no working lights. Some inmates reported being held for long periods in cages about the size of telephone booths. The organization says 25 people died at the South Georgia facility between January 2025 and August 2026. Valdosta State Prison is operated by the Georgia Department of Corrections.
