Inmate dies at Baldwin State Prison, investigation underway

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – An inmate died Sunday at Baldwin State Prison, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

The inmate was identified as Ricky Mathis. The cause of death has not been released at this time.

The GDC added that there were no reports or signs of an altercation in connection with the April 5 death.

The body was turned over to the county coroner and will be transported to the GBI crime lab to determine the official cause of death.

The death is being investigated by the GDC’s Office of Professional Standards as standard procedure; however, additional details are not available because the investigation is ongoing.

Mathis was convicted of first-degree burglary and was sentenced to serve two years, with a release date upon completion of an Integrated Treatment Facility.
