GDC: Telfair State Prison inmate killed in altercation, investigation underway
TELFAIR COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) — An inmate was killed at Telfair State Prison on Saturday, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
GDC officials confirmed that 28-year-old Preston Cato Phelps died after an “altercation” with multiple inmates.
Phelps’ body was taken to the county coroner’s office and will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab to determine the cause of his death.

His death is being investigated as a homicide by the GDC’s Office of Professional Standards.
The 28-year-old was serving life in prison for a murder and aggravated assault in Chattam County in 2012.
