A 21-year-old inmate, Je’Vion Benham, was found dead in his cell at Valdosta State Prison in Georgia on Dec. 24, with the coroner ruling the cause of death as strangulation and the manner as homicide. The Lowndes County Coroner’s Office estimated that Benham died on Monday, Dec. 22, meaning his body went undiscovered for approximately two days. Coroner Austin Fiveash publicly criticized the delay, calling it a major security concern and stating that Valdosta State Prison needs assistance. The Georgia Department of Corrections has been contacted for further information but has not yet responded.
