‘It could’ve been prevented’: Family demanding answers after they say GDC didn’t contact them after their loved one was attacked in prison
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) – A family said the justice system has failed them after allegedly learning about their loved one’s stabbing, inside a South Georgia prison, from other inmates.
Now we do want to warn you, some of the pictures and details in this story could be disturbing.
William Springer’s sisters said when they arrived at the hospital to see their brother, doctors told them he was brain-dead. They said he was stabbed several times in his face and head.
Springer was incarcerated at the Valdosta State Prison when the incident happened.
According to his family, inmates said that jailers didn’t respond for several hours. WALB has reached out to Georgia Department of Corrections officials for a response to those allegations. We were told they’ll get back with us.
“How is it that you get something in there and stab them in their head over seven times? I need justice for my little brother because something could have been done.” Sara Sharpe, Springer’s sister, said. “They still haven’t contacted me about nothing with my little brother and I’m wondering why hasn’t no one got in contact with me.”
The family donated Springer’s organs to people in need. An honor walk was held at a hospital in Macon, before Springer’s body was sent to Atlanta.
The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses to lay Springer to rest.
