The Georgia Department of Corrections says a dozen inmates now face charges after a deadly riot at Washington State Prison that left four dead.
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Corrections says 12 inmates are now facing charges in connection with a deadly riot at Washington State Prison.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the riot began when multiple fights broke out during visitation hours on January 11, 2026, triggering one of the largest law enforcement responses at the prison in years.
Four inmates died as a result of the riot, and 12 others were hospitalized.
Authorities identified the victims as Ahmod Hatcher, 23, and Jimmy Trammell, 42, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Teddy Jackson, 27, died hours later at Wellstar MCG.
Officials said Silas Westbrook, 42, was initially treated for minor injuries at the prison, then died after being released from the hospital.
Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran said multiple agencies responded, including the sheriff’s office, coroner’s office, Georgia State Patrol, Davisboro Police Department and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The Department of Corrections handled the response inside the prison.
The Department of Corrections says 12 inmates were charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, gang participation, and unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution for their role in the riot at Washington State Prison.
