GDC details deadly ‘gang-affilliated disturbance’ at Washington State Prison
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) — The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) has shared more details on the fights at Washington State Prison that left three inmates dead and over a dozen more injured, including a guard, calling it a suspected gang-affiliated “disturbance.”
GDC officials said the fight began at around 1:25 p.m. on Sunday along the sidewalk among multiple inmates.
While staff tried to clear the visitation area, the GDC said some inmates were able to enter it during the disturbance. No visitors were injured, and a correctional officer safely escorted them all out.
By 3 p.m., the GDC said the situation was “brought under control,” after staff deployed non-lethal weapons to stabilize the fights.
When the dust settled, three inmates were dead, 13 more were injured and a correctional officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The GDC confirmed the deceased prisoners as 42-year-old Jimmy Trammell, 23-year-old Ahmod Hatcher and 27-year-old Teddy Jackson.
WSB in Atlanta spoke with Trammell’s brother after the fights, who said he got a call from his cousin with news that Trammell had been killed just days before he was set to be released after serving time for burglary charges.
“When he was talking about getting out, he was talking about working and trying to have a better life with being free from prison after 10 years, he was happy, said Trammell’s brother. “He got a death sentence. They killed him. I need answers. We all need answers, and Washington State Prison needs to provide those answers.”
Washington State Prison remains on lockdown, and the incident is still under investigation by officials.
