Rodney Edward Smith, a 39-year-old inmate at Macon State Prison in Oglethorpe, Georgia, was extradited to Florida on Aug. 16 to face charges for an alleged hunting lease fraud scheme, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The FWC alleges Smith used smuggled cell phones and multiple online aliases to post fake hunting lease advertisements for properties he did not own, collecting deposits from hunters across 15 Florida counties between July 1, 2025, and April 30. He faces four felony charges in Gilchrist County, including fraudulent offering of property for lease and scheme to defraud, with bond set at $700,000. The FWC credited the Georgia Department of Corrections and the Dalton Police Department for their assistance in the investigation.
