Wrongful Conviction Compensation
Provides compensation for individuals who were wrongfully convicted and incarcerated.
What This Bill Does
HB 364 provides compensation for individuals who were wrongfully convicted and incarcerated in Georgia. The bill establishes a framework for exonerees to receive financial compensation for the years they lost to wrongful imprisonment.
GPS supports this bill because Georgia has historically provided little to no support for people proven innocent after years or decades behind bars. Exonerees often leave prison with no resources, no housing assistance, and no job skills relevant to a world that changed dramatically during their incarceration. Compensation is a basic matter of justice — the state took their freedom, and the state should help them rebuild.
