The Georgia Department of Corrections placed 27 state prisons on lockdown after a gang-related altercation at Hays State Prison in Chattooga County injured three inmates, Patch reported. The fight occurred Tuesday and was contained to two dorms at Hays, according to the GDC; the three injured inmates were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and have since returned to the facility. No staff members were injured. The GDC said the lockdown is a precautionary measure against retaliation, citing “increased security threat group activity,” and that investigations and intermittent security threat assessments are ongoing. The affected facilities, on lockdown until further notice, include Hays, Hancock, Augusta State Medical Prison, Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, and Macon State Prison, among others.
