Thomas, Micheal
Status: active
This profile reflects positional accountability — this individual held the leadership roles shown during the dates shown, during which the listed deaths or lawsuits occurred. Inclusion does not constitute a legal finding of personal culpability for any specific incident.
Tenure Summary
Micheal Thomas began his GDC career as a Counselor at Macon State Prison in 2010 and rose steadily through the ranks — Chief Counselor at Central State Prison (2013), behavioral health roles (2015), and six years as a Deputy Warden (2016–2021) at facilities not identified in GPS records. He reached facility-lead status as Correctional Superintendent at McEver Probation Detention Center (2022) before ascending to Warden at Dodge State Prison (January 2024) and then Wilcox State Prison (July 2025–present). GPS records attribute 20 deaths across his facility-lead tenures: one at Dodge State Prison and 19 at Wilcox State Prison. Of those 19 Wilcox deaths, GPS records categorize at least four as homicides and notes in two cases specifically describe the deaths as occurring in segregation ("the hole"). One federal civil lawsuit naming Thomas as defendant is pending as of this writing.

What Happened on Their Watch
Dodge State Prison — Warden (January 2024–June 2025)
GPS records attribute three deaths to Dodge State Prison during Thomas's tenure there. Kenneth Brown, 58, died January 31, 2024. Sotero Uriquiza-Hernandez, 51, died May 20, 2025. Joseph Chatfield, 62, died June 13, 2025. All three are categorized as cause category 6 in GPS records, with no additional notes provided. Dodge State Prison also recorded two deaths in 2022 — Hezekiah Sha'Nard Cuyler, 21 (blunt force trauma to the head, September 14, 2022) and Douglas Anthony Forts, 57 (acute traumatic amputation sustained in a fight, June 2, 2022) — though those predate Thomas's warden appointment. Thomas held the Warden 1 title at Dodge through at least June 2025 while simultaneously appearing in salary records tied to Wilcox State Prison beginning January 2025; GPS records reflect overlapping facility assignments during this transition period.
Wilcox State Prison — Warden (January 2025–present)
GPS records attribute 19 deaths to Wilcox State Prison during Thomas's tenure, spanning January 2025 through at least March 2026. The deaths range in age from 20 to 78. At least four are categorized as homicides (cause category 3): Ian Rashod Henry, 29 (June 22, 2025), noted as a "likely homicide (hole)"; Dominique Cornelius Cole, 37 (June 8, 2025), noted as "homicide (hole)"; Daylyne Collins, 30 (April 20, 2025), noted as "homicide (G2)"; and Marcus Walker, 20 (January 10, 2026), reported via Georgia Prisons Exposed social media. Two additional deaths in March 2026 — Jeremy Cole Watson, 37 (March 9), and Earnest Sims, 44 (March 16) — are categorized as cause category 6; GPS records note that Watson was found dead in segregation after an inmate distributing lunch trays noticed he had not risen for his meal, with an emergency count called around 11 a.m. following a prior inspection and audit team walkthrough.
Separately, per GPS intel records, a source reported multiple stabbings at Wilcox State Prison resulting in a lockdown in early April 2026. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a family member of one deceased prisoner alleged that guards at Wilcox were tied to gangs, with gang members "signing off on actions for the guards"; the AJC also reported that the warden promised Cole's family a follow-up call with details about his death that never came, and that the prison failed to return the deceased's belongings including his wallet and Social Security card. The AJC attributed no specific follow-up to Thomas by name in those accounts. An AJC report also cited a DOJ finding that Georgia's gang-run prisons were "riddled with regular violence and sexual assault," a systemic finding that overlaps Thomas's tenure at Wilcox. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported that severe staff shortages have allowed gang members to effectively run Georgia state prisons, and that families of incarcerated people who die are routinely left without information. The AJC separately reported that in the first six months of 2025, GDC was investigating 42 deaths statewide as possible homicides — nearly two-thirds of the 66 suspected homicides investigated in all of 2024. A gang fight at Wilcox in early 2025 sent nine inmates to the hospital with stab wounds, per GPS intel records. An AJC report also alleged that officials failed to recognize James Wheeler's mental health history and placed him in solitary confinement at Wilcox, where he was found hanging; no date is specified in the GPS record for that incident.
Earlier Staff Postings (Macon State Prison, 2010; Central State Prison, 2013)
Thomas held staff-tier and specialty-lead roles — not facility-lead positions — at Macon State Prison (2010) and Central State Prison (2013). GPS records and intel reports document significant violence at both facilities during those years and in subsequent periods, but Thomas did not hold command authority at either location. Those facility histories are documented separately in GPS facility records.
